Job Purpose

As the Retail Commercial Operations Manager you will be accountable for and lead the commercial and operational activity within the retail channel. You will use dashboards and other key metrics to analyse performance and influence actions, ensuring retail is a key consideration in central decision making. Critically, the review and subsequent follow up of actions relating to key metrics will lead to improved retail business performance and contribute significantly to retail sales in excess of £90m per annum.

You will proactively drive change within the business, influencing at ‘Head Of’ and ‘Director’ level to develop commercial initiatives designed to improve retail performance. You will lead the operational planning of retail activity to deliver both commercial targets and operational excellence, triaging competing business requests and aligning retail activity to the overall Lakeland Trading Calendar. 

About The Role

Drives Business Success 
•    To lead the planning and co-ordination of all retail aspects of the Lakeland Trading Calendar, working cross functionally to align with the Buying & Merchandising, Marketing, Operations and Finance functions
•    To lead, develop and deliver a central Retail Workload & Activity Plan that supports and delivers the retail functional objectives in line with both the business objectives and Lakeland’s Trading Calendar
•    To lead the development of the Retail Labour Plan, a c£12m spend, ensuring resources are optimised and aligned to planned commercial and operational activity
•    To review retail activity to achieve improved ROI, improved retail commercial performance and improved customer feedback
•    To lead the development of retail commercial reporting, ensuring actionable and consistent reporting that aligns to the retail functional objectives
•    To be the retail representative at key strategic development projects and workstreams
•    To liaise with Retail Marketing to operational plan in store events and demonstrations, as well as window and POS execution
•    To liaise with the Category Development & Space Manger to operationally plan category and SKU mix by store type and grade

Operational Excellence 
•    To manage the retail communication process, acting as a gatekeeper to ensure store and field teams are informed and that there is a mechanism for providing and managing a two-way communications process, ensuring that retail is represented centrally
•    To lead the commercial priorities for retail; ensuring optimal outcomes
•    To develop lean operational processes in conjunction with buying and merchandising, marketing and distribution that support delivery of the ‘business critical path’
•    To be accountable for retails representation at Performance Meetings and Bi-monthly Review Meetings, updating on performance and ensure alignment with the wider business
•    To ensure retail ready activities are built which align to the Retail Workload & Activity plan
•    To support the Retail North and South Divisional Managers, acting as a co-ordinating touch-point for the field based retail support team
•    To work with Retail Marketing and Buying & Merchandising to ensure commercial priorities are executed in a store friendly manner in alignment with the Lakeland Trading Calendar

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential – the ‘must haves’

•    A minimum of 5 years experience in a senior leadership role in a retail environment
•    Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience
•    Commercially and operationally astute with a proven track record of delivery
•    Experience of workload and activity planning within a retail environment
•    Experience of working in both a retail operational capacity and in a differing retail function eg…buying, marketing or distribution
•    An ability to work independently and capable of autonomous decision making
•    An articulate communicator, able to deal diplomatically at all levels, both internally and externally
•    A strong influencer, able to build strong relationships with internal and external customers
•    A methodical, but practical approach – with the ability to work with frequent interruptions, at pace and meet deadlines
•    Project management and change management experience
•    The ability to travel for 1 day a week to stores distributed across the UK.

Desirable – the ‘nice to haves’ 

•    Experience in strategy development
•    Experience in constructing business cases 
•    Retail Divisional Management experience.
